Dill essential oil (Anethum graveolens) is a rare oil created through steam distillation of the entire plant. Its aroma is fresh, sweet, and herby, and although its lesser known, it has some unsung benefits.

Dill is used for digestive support, because of this it makes a good flavoring agent to meals as it may assist in the digestive process. It's also sometimes found in digestive blends or used in conjunction with them.

Precautions of Dill Essential Oil

Use with caution if you have a history from seizures. Always test for skin sensitivity prior to widespread use and use on the feet when possible. Excessive use of any oil can lead to skin sensitization. Keep out of eyes, ears, or nose. Not all oils are created equal, so test brands carefully, and never use an oil in a way not recommended by its maker.

Popular Uses of Dill Essential Oil

  • Diffuse with Bergamot and Lemon to lessen stress and anxious feelings.
  • Add to marinades, soups, and salads to enhance flavor and promote digestion.
  • Use when canning to help preserve garden vegetables.
  • Add 1–2 drops to an herbal tea before bedtime to promote a restful sleep.
  • Massage 1-2 drops into the soles of the feet or over the liver each day to support detoxification.
  • For calming, diffuse as needed, or inhale 1 drop from your hands. Consider blending with Roman Chamomile, as well.

Inspiration for Using Dill Essential Oil

Greek flavor finishing salt: With a fork, mix 1/8 cup sea salt with 3 drops Lemon and 2 drops Dill essential oils on a plate. Adjust seasoning to taste. Let dry then store in an air tight glass container.

Dill Veggie Dip: Mix; 1 cup Mayonnaise, 1/4 cup Sour Cream, 1-2 drops Lemon essential oil, 1-2 drops Dill essential oil, 1 Tbs chopped, fresh, parsley and 1 tsp Dijon Mustard. Serve w/ fresh veggies.

Sugar Craving Fighter: Fill roller bottle 1/3 with Dill essential oil, fill the rest of the way w/ carrier oil. Apply to wrists to help fight sugar cravings.



IMPORTANT NOTE ON QUALITY

Not all oils are created equal. Because of a lack of industry standards and a lack of regulation on terms such as "natural" or "pure", much of what you find at the drug store is NOT a therapeutic grade of essential oil and may lack real quality or even contain contaminants or adulterants (way more common than you'd think).

A LOT goes into creating a high quality essential oil. A good brand should follow these guidelines:

  • Proper plant varieties
  • Each plant grown indigenously for the healthiest plant
  • Grown without chemical pesticides, herbicides, etc
  • Harvested with precise timing to ensure peak properties
  • Extracted with proper temp and pressure to preserve oil molecules
  • Third-party testing of every batch
  • Stand behind the internal use of their oils
